Faith in our nation and in God provided the foundation of the legacy of Dr. King’s struggle for a better America, which we have recognized and celebrated as a national holiday since it was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

Dr. King’s courage to put his convictions into action and his persistence in advancing the cause of equality and a better America provide inspiration for us today, decades after his death. While Dr. King’s life ended in Memphis in 1968 where the National Civil Rights Museum now stands, his march for a better, more equal America continues today.

While all defendants accused of a crime are provided with a presumption of innocence, the charges against Clerk Jackson, handed down by a grand jury following months of investigation, are serious and directly implicate his duties as a public official.

Mr. Jackson, a Democrat, was elected by the people of Shelby County in 2008 to serve the people of Shelby County. If the charges against Mr. Jackson are true, he has violated the trust of the voters. Guilty or innocent, however, Mr. Jackson’s indictment should be a reminder to us, the voters of Shelby County, that we should choose our elected officials carefully and with due consideration.

The office of General Sessions Clerk will be on the ballot in the county election in August 2012.
